Ibukunoluwa Ajayi: Be at Peace With Your Own Journey

0
0

The year is slowly winding down, and a lot of people are assessing their lives in terms of personal achievements, career advancement, relationships, etc.

This is the time where most people make decisions that will either lead to reward or regret. But before you make that move, take that drastic decision or enter into that commitment, pause, read and think so that you do not end up jeopardizing your future.

Time, they say, waits for no man. But what they forgot to add is that we all have separate races to run, and therefore we all can’t run at the same time or at the same pace.

Growing up, I was one of those kids who started school quite early. I moved on to secondary school from primary 5, and by the age of 16, I was in the university. My plan was to graduate at 20 (with hopes that the leg ulcer I had would have healed by then), venture fully into modeling, retire at 30 (already married). Write a book, launch a jewelry line and travel the world doing public speaking.

I had my life planned out and I knew what I wanted at every turn. But life has a way of reordering your life for you, and, as I usually say, “Life happened to me.”

I had to leave the university because the leg ulcer I had wasn’t healing and the school authorities thought it was best for me to go and get proper treatment. I left the university and I had to have surgery done on my leg. After my surgery, I was home recuperating and I started to think about all my plans.

For a child who started life on a fast pace, things were really slowing down and most of my friends had left me behind. My classmates were in their 2nd year in the university, and here I was, not even sure I’d be able to return to school.

I felt like life had moved on and left me behind. I felt like I would one day wake up and everyone I knew would be married with kids and living life and I’d just be that university drop out they used to know. Even my younger sister was rounding up with secondary school and I feared she would also leave me behind. This was one of my greatest fears.

I shared my fears with my mum, and she wisely reminded me that we are all on different paths in life and we all have different destinations. She said, “It doesn’t matter how soon, but how well,” which she interpreted to mean that it really doesn’t matter how fast a person rises, it’s how well the person ends that matters. So many people began their journey in life so gloriously, but their end was miserable. My mum said all I had to do was hold on, pray, do my part, and God would do the rest. She told me not to be envious of my friends that seemed “to be moving up in the world.” Everyone has their own time, she said, and when it’s your turn to shine, theirs would be old news.

A lot of people fall into the wrong line of work or walk wrong paths just because they’re trying to catch up to others. Their need to meet up with societal expectations pushes them into making wrong decisions that they would later come to regret.

Social media has become the benchmark for measuring success and so many people are doing unethical things just so that they can show off on social media. They have forgotten that social media is a world of “make-believe” and all that glitters isn’t really gold.

All precious stones go through a refining process. Some take longer than others, but when the refining stage is over and they come out as finished goods, neither can take the other’s place.

They’re all unique and serve different purposes – the same goes for us as human beings. No two people have the same path. Our time frames are different, so also are the plans that God has for us.

Comparing yourself to someone else is like comparing the sun to the moon; they both have their time, but they each shine when it’s their turn to.

No one can take your space or your glory. Only you have the power to seize your opportunity when it comes or let it slip.

Now I’m not encouraging anyone to be lazy or sit back and wait for “time and chance.” Rather, I want to encourage everyone who is putting in the work, making an effort, planting and praying for a harvest. Do not grow tired or weary. Your season will come. Do not compromise your standards to get what you want or compare your life to anyone else’s. Just keep working hard and doing the right things, your time will come and it will be well worth the wait!

Every day I hold on to my mother’s words of wisdom and no matter how slow things seem to be going, I am encouraged because once upon a time I thought my life was over at 16, but today I’m a living proof that when it’s your time, nothing and no one can hold you back.

Meet Kel-P, the Producer behind Burna Boy’s Grammy-Nominated Album ‘African Giant’

Surely you’ve heard the phrase “It’s Kel-P vibes” at the start of some of your favourite songs this year. His name’s been everywhere on the radio. From Burna Boy‘s best hits to Niniola‘s “Boda Sodiq,” and even Wizkid‘s “Ghetto Love.” Still, you had no idea who that was. Well…

Kel-P is the 24-year-old producer who deserves all the accolades for producing and also writing Burna Boy’s major hits.

Kel-P was the primary producer of his Grammy-nominated album African Giant, producing and co-writing nine tracks with four being released as singles such as: ‘Pull Up’, ‘Another Story’, ‘Gbona’ and ‘On The Low’.

Signed to Aristokrat Records, “Eleganza” (2017) by Solidstar became his first major production, and since then caught the attention of many artists such as rapper Future, Ceeza Milli, T’neeya and Phyno.

Kel-P draws his melodic inspiration from early-2000s R&B like Rihanna and Destiny’s Child and extracts from his native roots through Fela Kuti for his signature guitar chords and drum patterns. He mentored under Sarz for 8 months in 2016.

Only three years in the industry, Kel-P is successfully bringing the sound of Africa to the global stage, and it’s only the beginning.

He is getting set to release produced tracks for Wizkid’s highly anticipated 4th studio album, “Made In Lagos,” scheduled to drop at the end of the year.

Nice work, Kel- P 👏🏾!

Mfonobong Inyang: May Day 2020 and Skills For the Post-Pandemic Worker

0
0

First, I must celebrate workers all over the world who have shaped our past, impacted our present and are continuing to influence the future. Of course, the medical front-line workers whose labour of love rank up there with the greatest sacrifices of all time are the real heroes. For many countries, they have been faced with the unenviable task of finding the delicate line of compromise between health and the economy. Anyone who tells you we are ever reverting to status quo ab initio is either being insincere, plain ignorant or overly optimistic.

Hopefully, a vaccine comes along sooner than later but know that this virus will not go away at the snap of Thanos’ fingers. Regardless of whether a lockdown is in play or eased – a new normal has been forever forged in the reality of our lives, businesses and governance. Tech has long been identified as the inevitable future and with the current circumstances, the question then becomes, “how disruption-proof are you or your business?”

Whether it is fire, pandemic, recession, policy, supply or a change in any other variable – will your ‘rug’ be taken from beneath you?

Certain skills will run the world and tech will strongly enable the post-pandemic world. Here are some you should invest in if you don’t already possess them. You don’t even have to quit your job o! Remote working will be a bigger vibe going forward, so you need to be online more than you have ever been. One of the fallout of this pandemic will be the loss of jobs so the safest way to predict your own future will be to create it! So you can add these to the skills you already possess.

Writing
Nothing will stop the demand for this. You can do a lot of things with this like copywriting, blogging, ghost-writing (my favourite), corporate communication, social media content, CV review, transcription, scripts, translation, hard cover or ebooks, freelance journalist, etc. You have loads of options but the major keys about writing is self-development and consistency. This is because writing only becomes a skill after much practice and you really begin to earn from it after you have shown a significant level of consistency.

Website Development
Whilst the transitional businesses are consolidating their digital dominance, many traditional businesses are playing catch-up. This means that more websites will pop up and many more will need to be managed. A person with this skill will almost never run out of clients. Invest in data so you can attend the YOUniversity of YouTube because it’s a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) skill. However, you need to attend a professional class or take a course to sharpen your knowledge.

Public Speaking
Gone are those days when public speaking was seen as a skill for top executives or ‘motivational speakers’. The ability to sell will be a veiled game-changer after the dust settles because brands will bombard the media with an avalanche of commercials in a daunting attempt to shift the consumer behaviour from its state of shock. You can develop audiobooks, skits, podcasts, music, webinars, voice-overs, tutorials, etc.

Video blogging (vlogging) is another way that your elocution can earn you income; you can talk about cooking, technology, fashion, relationships, movies, books etc. Brands may want to use your platform to reach a targeted audience and you will end up smiling to the bank.

Photography, Cinematography, Graphic Designing
These three skills deserve an honourable mention. Remember storytelling will assume a different dimension and they form the core of how that is achieved. Interestingly, all three are inter-related because they have overlapping roles. Plus, these activities will be in hot demand when this agoraphobia goes down and we are out of the woods regarding attending events.

E-Commerce
Over-the-counter trade will take a hit because many people will understandably have a phobia of physical exchanges in public places. Also, the WHO once hinted that currency notes could contribute to the spread of the virus. So you either develop digital products or put in place a system that enables virtual transactions/payments. You can even help others sell online through digital marketing or affiliate marketing.

You can also sign up as a driver for cab/bike-hailing platforms because for those that can afford it, they don’t want to be in a crowded bus. Plus delivery business will take centre stage for obvious reasons. Or better still, sign up on e-marketplace platforms like Fiverr or Upwork where you can buy or sell skills/services. Amazon is making huge revenues because more people are buying and selling on their website during this pandemic more than they usually do.

Live Stream Set-up
On a personal level, we all go on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook Live when we want to transmit audio-visual experiences but in the post-pandemic era, this will be done at a very industrial level. Teleconferencing is also a thing now; many companies, religious bodies, government at different levels have now started embracing virtual meetings. Many schools are investing in online learning too because children are very vulnerable and schools won’t be open in a hurry.

So if you can help set up and manage this technology for these people, you will be making a killing. Physical distancing is a neo-culture and the need to manage risks by avoiding large gathering will continue for the foreseeable future.

Apps
An army of apps will emerge after this because companies want you to employ self-help as much as possible without physically visiting their office premises. For example, banks have, over the past few years, tilted towards this and going forward, they will invest more in virtual banking. Even tele-medical services are now on the rise. The knowledge of coding can help you develop this and more. Many transactions will be done via phones and other tech gadgets. Apps will be one of the ‘happening’ things in a post-pandemic era.

There are many other skills you can learn besides these ones I have highlighted here. You can read up my previous article where I meticulously addressed the methodologies, tools and other information regarding remote working/working from home.

I think it was Winston Churchill that admonished the leaders of Great Britain then about never allowing a good crisis go to waste. One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself in times like this is that of perspective. The greater tragedy will be if you don’t learn and unlearn anything after this. Let go of the old guard and embrace these new paradigms.

For now, let’s continue with the recommended Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) like hand-washing, physical distancing, wearing of face masks while the government is using this lockdown to ramp up testing and contact-tracing. You should love yourself enough to adhere to these guidelines because they are preventive not curative.

I understand that this is a tough time for all of us; we didn’t see this coming. Staying at home is taking a toll on many people but to echo Thanos’ words, “the hardest choices require the strongest wills”. Remember to be your brother’s keeper as we comfort our hearts with the belief that this too shall pass!

Mfonobong Inyang: Our Investment In The Future of Our Children Is Still Being Handled With Kid Gloves

0
0

It is usually said that children are the leaders of tomorrow – I used to totally accept that. However, as I grew older – both in age and in understanding – I began to question that narrative. In reality, there is no day called ‘tomorrow’. Today is that ‘tomorrow’ we talked about yesterday. In essence, if we’re not actively creating and shaping the future for our children by putting in the work today, there would be no leadership opportunities for them ‘tomorrow’. Tomorrow is only a projection of today’s sacrifices, so if you don’t buy a ticket, don’t expect to win the lottery! That was one of the things that Mufasa got right in The Lion King; he prepared Simba from the jump for future leadership of Pride Rock.

The More Things Change, The More We Remain The Same

One of the things that leaves me gobsmacked, and for which I have never hidden my grouse, is how our educational curriculum in Nigeria is still very pedestrian.

Let me put that in context:

I am in my twenties, meaning that over two decades ago, I was in primary school. There, I was told then that Ali is a boy, Simbi is a girl, Edet lives in Calabar, Eze goes to school.

Today, in 2020, children are still being taught that Ali is a boy, that Simbi is a girl, that Edet lives in Calabar and Eze still goes to school. Meanwhile, I have graduated from the university seven years ago!

Thing have not changed in at least twenty years – the school curriculum is still more or less the same. So is it possible that Ali is now all grown up and married with his own kids? That Simbi is now one of the power brokers in the fashion industry? That Edet now lives in Lagos because of his role as Chief Executive of a top tier bank? Or that Eze is now in the Senate as an elected public office holder?

Where is the evolution of these stories? Why can’t we update the learning experience for our children? Now you know why some parents ensure their wards attend schools that run international curriculum even though it costs them an arm and a leg – they know that the competition is no longer local but global. This is one of the reasons why we, in most cases, have to take remedial studies before gaining admission abroad.

I owned by first laptop when I was already in the university! That is a serious anomaly because at 19, Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook. At 20, Bill Gates founded Microsoft. At 21, Steve Jobs founded Apple. Today, these three companies are among the famous ‘Big Five’ in the United States of America with a combined market capitalization of at least $3 trillion! I want to break that cycle for my children. If possible, my child’s first word shouldn’t be ‘dada’ but ‘data’.

Let me bring this closer to home. One aspect of the politics surrounding schools’ reopening is that this pandemic has really exposed the level of our dysfunction – that’s why some people are pushing for an immediate resumption of physical classroom learning to save face. In more developed societies, the transition to online school or e-learning isn’t too cumbersome because not only do they already have the infrastructure in place, that option has been in their playbook for a while.

Here, we have many children disenfranchised from learning because the system has failed them. Since I was born, I am yet to see any state or Federal Government budget in Nigeria with at least 26% allocated to education as recommended by the UNESCO.

Are We Protecting Children Enough?

Hell no! If you check the newspapers or online news platforms, you’re sure to find one or two cases of paedophiles on the loose, some of which are incestuous acts. Those are the ones reported, there are far more that we never get to hear about. In some of these cases, the perpetrators get away with a slap on the wrist because its termed a ‘family matter’. Tons of children are still with their captors. We keep playing the ostrich while our little ones are turned into statistics.

The future of over 13 million out-of-school children estimated by UNICEF hangs in the balance. We’re skating on very thin ice – this egungun is already on the expressway. If we don’t do something about it, those with bad intentions will weaponize their desperation and the society will be worse off for it.

Yes, They Can! And I’m Not Kidding!

The idea of civilization is to bequeath a world better than we met it to the next generation. Especially when we’re coming from a more traditional background, it takes courage to allow children born in a transitional era to go on and be the best they can be.

In the hit Disney, animated movie, Moana, her parents told her she was going to be the next village chief but they also told her never to go beyond a certain point on the seas. She eventually did and found out the so called ‘tradition’ of not sea-faring by the villagers was nothing but cleverly constructed lies to hide an ignoble past.

Same with Warner Animation Group’s Smallfoot, where Migo, the young son of Dorgle, the gong-ringer always believed that it wasn’t any of the community’s effort that made the sun ‘wake up’ every morning. He dared to journey in search of the truth, only to find out another world existed out there and the myths and traditions were all concocted by the Stonekeeper.

The common factor in both stories is that the older generation projected their insecurities and incompetence on the next generation, but it took one child that was curious enough to question the status quo, to lead the change.

So here’s a challenge, do something special for your child or any child around you. Beyond the usual gifts, have a conversation with them. Ask them what they really want to do when they grow up, ask them what they are currently experiencing that they don’t like and what changes they would love to see you make. You’ll be surprised at the answers such honest conversations will spring up.

Most importantly, tell them you love them and that this too shall pass!

Be Transformed with The Catalyst: Why Do I Need a Life Vision?

0
0

Why do you need a vision for your life, and how can you create a powerful life vision for yourself? First, let’s answer the questions: What is a vision? Do you have a life vision? Do you have your life vision written down somewhere? Do you visualize, meditate upon and affirm your life vision daily? Do you live your life based on that vision? Does your vision cover your life holistically?

These are some of the most important questions you can ask yourself if you want to live a fulfilled, satisfied, happy, prosperous, successful, and peaceful life. Having vision is having the ability to think, imagine about, or plan for a desired future. A life vision is, therefore, a picture of the dream life that you would love to live today and every day.

A vision statement entails writing down the kind of dream life you would like to live, and drawing up a plan that is S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and within a specific Timeline). I believe that the best way to predict the future is to intentionally create it, but you can’t create and live a life that you haven’t envisioned, written down and planned for.

For you to live your life to the fullest, you must live life on your own terms. To live your life on your own terms, you have to know what you want from life, where you are going, how to get there and what is required of you. Following this, you must believe in your vision, commit to the action steps required to deliver and finally stay focused and consistent until you arrive at your desired dream vision.

Life presents endless possibilities for everyone. If you are looking to make something great of yourself, then you will need to set your priorities right, and set goals that are in line with your vision. With this process set in place, you are well on your way to a better and bigger future. When you are looking for something to keep you motivated, you need to first think about what you are doing for your own life. Determine what the most important things to you are.

How then do you create your life vision? Take responsibility right now, sit down, close your eyes and imagine the life you want. Yes, it can be that simple to start the process; creating a vision is about imagining things that don’t yet exist.

When imagining, don’t worry about what you’re seeing being achievable or not. Just let go, free your mind to dream and see where your mind takes you. You can always come back later to narrow it down. Imagine the critical areas of your life: health; career/business; finances; spiritual life; intimate relationship; home/family life; personal power; fun/recreation/rest; overall achievement, contentment and satisfaction; friendship/network; self-worth/confidence.

After the visualization exercise comes goal-setting.Setting short, medium and long-term goals is a very technical process, and you probably need a coach to help take you through this process.

Many people try to set their goals all by themselves at the end and beginning of each year but research has revealed that only 8% of people achieve all their goals, year in year out, meaning that 92% of people fail to achieve all their goals simply because they don’t know the goal-setting process and they don’t do the needful.

When you set goals the right way, you prepare yourself to do the hard work towards achieving your goals. The goal-setting process helps identify the things that will stand in your way, and also help you create the options and choices you should opt for.

You also need a life coach to help you create your holistic vision, set your next 10 year goals, identify your options and realities, then create a plan and road map that will take you from where you currently are to where you desire, deserve, and are designed to be.

Success, fulfillment, satisfaction, happiness, joy, prosperity, peace can be guaranteed if you know what to do. You’ve got to desire all these, believe that you deserve them and do the needful to manifest them. You can also get my eplaybooks to be the best version of yourself and live your best life every day.

“Wait For U” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The song marks Future’s second Hot 100 – and his first as the main singer. It’s Drake’s tenth No. 1 and Tems’ first.

Wizkid‘s popular afrobeat anthem “Essence” featuring Tems reached the Billboard top 10 chart last year, becoming the first Nigerian song to do so.

“Wait For U” was released on April 29 on Future’s album I Never Liked You via Freebandz/Epic Records, and its official video premiered on May 5. The song is the 1,137th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 63-year history, and the 61st to debut at the top.

A post shared by TEMS 🕊 (@temsbaby)

In this issue, Tems talks about her childhood, upbringing, and humble beginnings. She also delves into working with heavy hitters like Beyoncé, Drake, Future, and Wizkid, and the impact their collaborations had on her career. The Free Mind singer also shares what it feels like to have the global spotlight on her in the music industry, tours, and her plans as how she’s preparing for the next era in her career.

On the cover, the beauty is as chic as can be sporting a print Nanushka scarf, striking Balenciaga sunglasses and unmissable sparkling Boodles ring. Her makeup is a stunning flashback to the #Y2K beauty trend featuring fluttering lashes, bold-lined glossy lips and gorgeous polished skin.

In a statement made by the publication on Instagram:

Tems is way too chill. She’s collaborated with Beyoncé, Drake and Future. Adele is a fan. So is Barack Obama. The world is clamouring for a slice of Nigeria’s biggest music star. But @TemsBaby? She’s pretty relaxed about it.

Kamirly Announces the Release of His Debut Single Titled “High Level Banger” | November 10th

Michael Ojoko Halle, professionally known as Kamirly, is one of the latest superstar kids in the fast-growing Nigerian Music scene. Born in January 2005, the 17 years old wonder kid is ready to take the world by storm with his musical talent (amongst other talents in his arsenal) as he announces the upcoming release of his debut single which is an Ampiano infused record titled “HighLevel Banger” on November 10th, two days from today.

The song which was produced by the Hit Record Producer Yung Willis is inspired by the Nigerian multi-award-winning Black Diamond; Wande Coal.

On this record, Kamirly relies on modish Amapiano rhythm (a trendy South African genre that combines deep house, jazz, and lounge music and is characterized by synths, airy pads, and wide percussive bass lines) accompanied by his unique, rhythmic vocals to score deserved points on this song.

According to Kamirly, “I wanted my first single to be special, and I think this song is something special, it’s different and I can’t wait for the world to hear it. I’ve got a lot in store for my fans, but they’ll have to enjoy this one first”.

Besides Wande Coal, Kamirly’s sound is inspired by some of the greatest Africans to ever do music, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Timaya, 2Baba, Fela Kuti, Tems, and Rema. On the international scene, music from Drake, Future, and The Weeknd deeply inspires him.

He is currently signed to MMR Records as he sets his sights on becoming the next African kid to become a global brand. Kamirly is also heavy into fashion and is looking to showcase that side of himself in the nearest future, as he says,

“The World should Watchout, Kamirly is Coming”.
